Aloha, all you kona coffee drinking surfers! How’s it?
Check out this picture of me putting the breaks on in the Canary Islands on my last trip. As you can see it was super windy this day. I got out of the car and stepped into 50 -60 mph winds. I walked down wind across a big open field, with my board flipping violently under my arm, to the shore. I set my things behind a small rock pile and suited up. The wind was retarded! Howling off shore. Some other Canary Bodyboarders were suiting up and some pro windsurfer was scoring waves down the rocky beach. I didn’t hesitate and suited right up and got out there. My first few waves I tried to do a few top turns and go for long down the line shooters. I soon realized that the wind was holding me up way too much, and I needed to change plans. I started picking off wedgier waves and stalling. Duh… that makes sense. Anyway, I was able to get three or four, fun little, bowlers. Considering the conditions, wind in your face the whole time, paddling into the wind non-stop, battling to get into ‘em, surfing with 4 or 5 Canary Bodyboard Rippers….it was an accomplishment to score a few. Super siked! Then… the walk up wind to the car, with my board acting as a 6 foot sail! An amazing mission.
What Was Your Surf Mission Like?
I’m back on the Big Island in Kona now. Tending coffee trees and surfing on the regular. I’m gonna go check out the skate park in town. They have a mini ramp now….. aawww yeah.
